Sydney begins countdown to 50 years of international piano excellence
Piers Lane AO visits Sydney as planning accelerates for the 50th Anniversary Sydney International Piano Competition in July 2027
Sydney, 15 July 2026: Sydney has begun the countdown to the 50th Anniversary Sydney International Piano Competition, with Artistic Director Piers Lane AO in the city for two weeks of planning, meetings and engagement ahead of the landmark event in July 2027.
Mr Lane’s visit marks an important moment in preparations for the golden anniversary, which will celebrate five decades of musical excellence, artistic discovery, international friendship and unforgettable performances.
Founded in 1977, the Sydney International Piano Competition has brought many of the world’s finest young pianists to Australia and introduced Australian audiences to extraordinary artists from across the globe.
In July 2027, 32 exceptional young pianists will come to Sydney for a major anniversary Competition, beginning at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and culminating at the Sydney Opera House.
The event will celebrate not only the piano but Sydney itself: a multicultural, outward-looking city with a proud tradition of welcoming artists and audiences from around the world.
Piers Lane AO, one of Australia’s most distinguished pianists and Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition, said the 50th Anniversary would be a defining moment for the Competition.
“The Sydney is universally acknowledged to be one of the top half dozen piano competitions in the world: full of integrity and among the most demanding and consequential.” He said, “It is a nexus for the top keyboard talent of the world, jurors of distinction, discerning listeners and a wider public that loves its combination of artistry and quest for global recognition. Borders, cultures and languages are effortlessly erased in a feast of music-making.”
During his time in Sydney, Mr Lane is meeting with artistic, civic, philanthropic and cultural leaders as planning for the 2027 Competition gathers momentum.
His visit is also supporting the development of new partnerships, donor engagement, alumni connections and public programs associated with the anniversary.
Mark Coughlan, the Competition’s Executive Director said the 50th Anniversary represented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase Sydney and Australia to the world.
“There is nothing more thrilling or inspiring than witnessing brilliant young talent at the moment of discovery,” Mr Coughlan said.
“In July 2027, Sydney will welcome 32 of the world’s most accomplished young pianists for an extraordinary festival of piano music.
“At a time when music, beauty and international connection matter more than ever, this anniversary will celebrate artistic excellence, generosity and our shared humanity.”
The Anniversary Competition comes at a time when international cultural exchange has renewed significance. The gathering of young artists from many nations will demonstrate music’s enduring capacity to cross borders, create friendships and build understanding.
It will also recognise the many communities that have shaped the musical life of Sydney and Australia. The Sydney International Piano Competition brings together artists, audiences, families, teachers, students, donors, volunteers and music lovers from a remarkable range of cultural backgrounds.
The 2027 program will honour the vision of founders Claire Dan AM OBE and Rex Hobcroft AM, recognise the loyal supporters and Friends who have sustained the Competition across five decades, and welcome a new generation of artists and audiences.
Planning is underway for a series of anniversary initiatives, including a 50th Anniversary history project, expanded alumni engagement, public and educational programs, donor recognition and new opportunities for audiences throughout Australia and internationally to experience the Competition live and online.
Among the distinctive features of The Sydney is the challenge presented to competitors by performing on different piano makes during the preliminary and semifinal stages, testing their adaptability as well as their musical and technical artistry.
“The 50th Anniversary gives us a powerful opportunity to honour the past, celebrate the present and imagine the next 50 years,” Mr Lane added.

About Piers Lane AO
Piers Lane AO is Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition and one of Australia’s most distinguished pianists.
His long association with the Competition began when he was named Best Australian Pianist at the inaugural Sydney International Piano Competition in 1977. He subsequently served as a juror and has led the Competition artistically since 2016.
Based in London, he performs internationally as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist.
